Routine endoscopic screening for synchronous esophageal neoplasm in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: a prospective study

Abstract: Early detection of synchronous esophageal squamous cell neoplasm (ESCN) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients can significantly affect their prognosis. We investigated the prevalence of synchronous ESCN and the risk factors for developing ESCN in patients with HNSCC, and evaluated the effect of routine endoscopic screening in these patients. Subjects who were diagnosed as HNSCC from May 2010 to January 2014 were eligible. All patients underwent conventional white light endoscopic examinatio… Show more

“…Two did not provide complete data to calculate sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy values in either the per-patient or per-lesion analysis [7, 20]. In one, the examinations were performed by inexperienced endoscopists [8]; and in another, the data were collected retrospectively [21].…”

“…Reasons for exclusion of other studies are mentioned in Figure . Review of the 96 screening studies resulted in the selection of 23 Lugol chromoendoscopy screening studies (Table ) . Most other screening studies were performed with only white‐light endoscopy (eg, triple‐endoscopy) or with the use of PET/CT.…”

“…We routinely performed endoscopic screening for upper gastrointestinal tract cancer in all patients with HSCC ( Figure 3). It has been demonstrated that routine endoscopic screening is effective for the early detection of oesophageal cancer, which in turn results in less invasive treatments such as endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) (11). Recent advances in narrow band imaging (NBI) and Lugol chromoendoscopy (LCE) have been particularly useful for the early detection of oesophageal cancer, which can then be treated by ESD (12).…”
