Route to Larger Pulse Energy in Ultrafast Fiber Lasers

Abstract: Principles of pulse shaping aiming larger pulse energy in fiber lasers are reviewed. From conventional solitons generated in anomalous dispersion regime, stretched pulses in dispersion-managed fiber lasers, similaritons in normal dispersion regime, dissipative solitons in large normal dispersion regime, amplifier similaritons in fiber lasers with narrow bandwidth filtering, to dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in fiber lasers, scaling of pulse energy from pico-Joule level to micro-Joule is successfull… Show more

“…Besides the DSR pulse exhibiting square wave envelope, some other related pulse envelopes have also been observed, such as that with a tilt-top [38,39]. For some other particular pulses, although they, strictly speaking, could not be identified as in the DSR regime, there were some similarities between them and the DSR pulse in envelop, like the chair-like pulses [40], step-like pulses [41], etc.…”

“…The simulation results from Fig. 1c, d show that the 635 nm mode-locked pulses have a constant amplitude, a linearly broadening pulse duration and a narrow spectral peak profile with steep edges, which are the typical features of the DSR regime 26,32 .…”

“…These waves can preserve their overall shapes during propagation by adjusting their amplitudes and widths to accommodate gradual longitudinal variations in system parameters [1][2][3]. Much attention in the optics literature has been paid to similaritons in fiber lasers [3][4][5][6][7] and amplifiers [8,9], dispersion-decreasing fibers [10][11][12], and tapered inhomogeneous nonlinear waveguides [13][14][15][16][17][18]. Generic theoretical models governing the dynamics of similaritons tend to be based on the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation [1,2].…”
