Although microorganisms are the primary drivers of biogeochemical cycles, the structure and functioning of microbial food webs are poorly studied. This is the case in Sphagnum peatlands, where microbial communities play a key role in the global carbon cycle. Here, we explored the structure of the microbial food web from a Sphagnum peatland by analyzing (1) the density and biomass of different microbial functional groups, (2) the natural stable isotope (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) signatures of key microbial consumers (testate amoebae), and (3) the digestive vacuole contents of Hyalosphenia papilio, the dominant testate amoeba species in our system. Our results showed that the feeding type of testate amoeba species (bacterivory, algivory, or both) translates into their trophic position as assessed by isotopic signatures. Our study further demonstrates, for H. papilio, the energetic benefits of mixotrophy when the density of its preferential prey is low. Overall, our results show that testate amoebae occupy different trophic levels within the microbial food web, depending on their feeding behavior, the density of their food resources, and their metabolism (i.e., mixotrophy vs. heterotrophy). Combined analyses of predation, community structure, and stable isotopes now allow the structure of microbial food webs to be more completely described, which should lead to improved models of microbial community function.

Abstract. The present work describes the occurrence and diversity of rotifers with respect to the physicochemical parameters in a seasonal pond of Pune (India) for a period of one year. The study reports 45 rotifers belonging to 3 orders, 15 families and 26 different genera. Of these, 1, 30 and 38 are new records to India, Maharashtra state and Pune district respectively. The pond water exhibits a typical range of temperature (20.7-30.5 °C) and alkaline nature (7.4-9.5), characteristic of tropical freshwater bodies. The rotifer fauna is characterised by moderate diversity and evenness, higher dominance, and very low temporal community similarities. The study also reveals dominance of eurythermal and eutrophic rotifer species. Rotifer richness is positively correlated to rainfall and temperature, whereas a negative correlation between pH and conductivity is observed. Rotifer abundance is positively correlated with pH, whereas no such correlation is observed with temperature and conductivity. Conservation of seasonal water bodies is essential, as these habitats may reveal interesting relationships between the physicochemical parameters and the rotifer fauna present there.

The paper reported on a metacommunity analysis of zooplankton in two freshwater wetlands having contrasting ecological features for three seasons over a year. The effects of spatial connectedness, habitat fragmentation, environmental changes mediated by seasonal fluctuations and variability in assemblages of aquatic vegetation on the zooplankton community were compared. A total of 116 zooplankton species were recorded from both the study sites. Few zooplankton showed affinity for Site 1, whereas others were unique to Site 2. Sorensen"s similarity index revealed that the two sites were moderately similar with respect to zooplankton composition, but were moderately dissimilar with regard to floral composition. The present study has tested Community Wide Character Displacement (CWCD) hypothesis based on the results which exhibited less similarities in the fragmented local habitats within the same wetland than two major distantly located wetlands in respect of zooplankton species composition. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Cluster analysis have revealed that direct connectivity might have played most vital role in shaping community structure especially in case of planktonic organisms, followed by the influence of seasons and macrophytes.
