Rotifer communities of floodplain lakes of the Brahmaputra basin of lower Assam (N.E. India): biodiversity, distribution and ecology

Abstract: The rotifer communities of 15 acidic -alkaline and soft -marginally hard water floodplain lakes of the lower Assam valley of the Brahmaputra river basin, characterized by low ionic concentrations, reveal 164 species (178 taxa) belonging to 39 genera and 20 families and represent the richest biodiversity known to date in these ecotones of the Indian subcontinent. Nine species are new to the Indian Rotifera. Cosmopolitan (59.7%) > pantropical (15.2%) > cosmotropical (12.2%) species dominate the taxocoenosis. Bio… Show more

“…These isotopic enrichments indicated that these consumers mainly fed on CA in the current study. This agrees with our feeding observations on H. papilio, as well as with previous observations of feeding habits for A. vulgaris, E. compressa, and rotifers [19,21,48,49]. Secondly, the significant δ 15 N enrichment between FOMB and consumers such as A. flavum and nematodes suggests the existence of a detritivorous pathway.…”

“…The pH values are higher than those reported from the North Eastern states (Sharma, 2000a(Sharma, , 2005(Sharma, , 2009b Arora (1963aArora ( , 1963b The present study reports forty-five rotifer species from the sampled site of which one is a new record to India, 30 are reported for the first time from Maharashtra state and 38 species are first reports to Pune district. The checklist exceeds the previous report from University of Pune pond , who reported 13 species from the present site.…”

“…However, this number is much less than that found in floodplains of north-eastern part of India (Sharma, 2005;Sharma, 2010) and freshwater riverine networks of the south-west Bengal . The diversity, species composition and percentage of surface coverage of macrophytes have appeared to be important density dependant factors determining the density and diversity of aquatic invertebrate faunal Van de Meutter et al, 2008).…”
