Rotator cuff tears: Review of epidemiology, clinical assessment and operative treatment

Abstract: Rotator cuff tears (RTCs) are the most common cause of shoulder disability. There has been a proportional increase in the prevalence of RCT in accordance with the rising trend of an ageing population. In this article we review the current literature encompassing RCT epidemiology, risk factors and aetiopathogenesis. We also summarize the current diagnostic modalities, treatment options, rehabilitation and outcomes.

“…The etiology of rotator cuff tears is multifactorial, and age-related tendon degeneration is the most important risk factor associated with these lesions. 3,7 In our study, we observed that the frequency of supraspinatus tears became higher with increasing age among the patients: 48.7% of the patients over 40 years of age presented lesions while only 6.2% of the patients aged 40 years or younger had these lesions.…”

“…These results are concordant with those from previous accuracy studies and epidemiological studies and thus demonstrate that the sample was representative. 3,4 Evaluation of the accuracy of shoulder ultrasonography for diagnosing these lesions allowed us to compare our results with those found in the worldwide literature. The present study assessed the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonography for diagnosing supraspinatus tendon injuries, using magnetic resonance imaging as the reference method.…”

“…These factors include exercise regimens, occupation, nutrition, medication, and smoking. 23,33,34 Chronic injuries are associated with repetitive mechanical strain and loading. 35 Acute injuries are associated with sudden eccentric movement that causes the tendon to tear or rupture from the bone.…”

“…This functional anatomical unit is critical for normal shoulder movement and stability [1][2][3]. Rotator cuff tendon (RCT) injuries are frequent, and often result in pain, substantial tissue morbidity and disability, affecting mainly athletes, active workers and the elder population [4,5]. As our society continues to age and remain active, these conditions not only have an impact on people's quality of life and activities of daily living, but also represent significant economic burden [4,6].…”
