Rostral Cingulate Zone and correct response monitoring: ICA and source localization evidences for the unicity of correct- and error-negativities

Abstract: Falkenstein et al. (1991) first described a negative wave occurring just after an erroneous response in choice Reaction time tasks ("Error Negativity"-Ne or "Error Related Negativity"-ERN). Thanks to Laplacian transform of the data, Vidal et al. (2000Vidal et al. ( , 2003a described a wave on correct trials with similar topography and latency, although of smaller amplitude compared to the errors. A critical question is whether the Ne observed on errors and the negativity reported on correct trials reflect the … Show more

“…Alternatively, because the dorsal ACC is usually considered to be the main generator of the ERN as well as the CRN component (see Roger, Bénar, Vidal, Hasbroucq, & Burle, 2010), while the SMA may be related to proactive behavioural adjustments (Hikosaka & Isoda, 2010;Ullsperger & King, 2010), our new ERP results (110-170 ms post-response onset) suggest that a prolonged CRN/action monitoring effect may be at stake in the non-familiarised condition. By contrast, in the familiarised condition, there is likely a rapid transition following response onset from dorsal ACC (CRN) to more dorsal frontal regions (including the SMA), consistent with the involvement of a differential proactive behavioural control mechanism when monitoring the adequacy of actions performed with pre-familiarised stimulus attributes.…”

“…We used the cleaned, preprocessed EEG datasets and their respective ICA decompositions to employ automated IC identification based on the Compass algorithm (Wessel and Ullsperger, 2011). Our goal was to first identify ICs that explained a significant proportion of error-related activity in the EEG signal, and then to test whether these same ICs could also explain novelty-driven EEG deflections (for a similar logic, see Gentsch et al, 2009;Roger et al, 2010). For this, we computed difference waves between all error and all standard trials (novel trials were not included in this analysis).…”
