Rossby Wave Propagation into the Northern Hemisphere Stratosphere: The Role of Zonal Phase Speed

Abstract: Sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events are to a dominant part induced by upward propagating planetary waves. While theory predicts that the zonal phase speed of a tropospheric wave forcing affects wave propagation into the stratosphere, its relevance for SSW events has so far not been considered. This study shows in a linear wave diagnostic and in reanalysis data that phase speeds tend eastward as waves propagate upward, indicating that the stratosphere preselects eastward phase speeds for propagation, espe… Show more

“…Accordingly, the stratospheric background atmosphere is dominated by planetary waves with zonal wavenumbers smaller than 4 (e.g. Domeisen et al, 2018;Barnett and Labitzke, 1990;Pawson and Kubitz, 1996), consistent with the findings in this paper. In order to investigate altitudes below 20 km from LEO infrared sounders, higher wavenumbers than wavenumber 6 have to be taken into account.…”

“…Stationary waves, that is, waves that do not move in the zonal direction, can only propagate vertically into the stratosphere when the zonal winds are westerly and below some critical threshold (Charney & Drazin, ), which is why they are inhibited in their propagation during summer, when easterly winds prevail in the extratropical stratosphere (Plumb, ). This propagation window is shifted for zonal phase speeds different from zero, which can lead to enhanced wave propagation ahead of SSW events (Domeisen, Martius, et al, ). Wave breaking in addition contributes to the driving of the Brewer‐Dobson circulation, which is associated with downwelling over the polar cap (Butchart, ).…”

“…Inertial instabilities in a rotating stratified fluid, like the earth's atmosphere, arise from an imbalance between the pressure gradient and the centrifugal forces when the absolute angular momentum decreases with the radius (Dunkerton, 1981). To stabilize the imbalance, horizontal circulation generates transport of angular momentum in the meridional direction.…”
