Abstract:In this study, the in vitro bacterial growth inhibition, antioxidant activity and the content in bioactive components of Plectranthus barbatus, P. hadiensis var. tomentosus, P. madagascarensis, P. neochilus and P. verticillatus aqueous extracts were investigated and compared by three extraction methods (infusion, decoction and microwave extractions). The microwave extract of P. madagascariensis showed the higher antimicrobial activity against the Staphylococcus epidermidis strain with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 40 µg/mL. This extract also showed no toxicity in a general toxicity assay and no considerable cytotoxicity against a human keratinocyte cell line. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH method), and all showed antioxidant activity. The microwave extract of P. madagascariensis was the one with the highest antioxidant activity (IC 50 value of 41.66 µg/mL). To increase extract stability, the microwave P. madagascariensis extract was then successfully encapsulated into alginate beads with high efficiency. Abstract:The chemical composition, the acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effect and the antimicrobial activity of the Tunisian Asteriscus maritimus (L.) Less essential oils obtained from flowers, leaves and stems were investigated. According to the GC and GC-MS analysis results, 45 (99.32%), 34 (94%) and 29 compounds (94.95%) were identified, respectively. In the essential oils extracted from the flowers and leaves of A. maritimus, oxygenated sesquiterpenes were abundantly found (57.82 and 46.39%, respectively). Hexdecanoic acid was detected in an important amount in leaves and stems (30.35 and 49.18%, respectively), while β-eudesmol (24.25%), menthyl acetate (17.03%) and pentadecanal (15.38%) were the most abundant constituents in flowers. To evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity, all volatiles were tested against some bacterial and fungal agents. It was found that only the volatile oil from flowers exhibited interesting antibacterial and antifungal activities. When screened for their anti-acetylcholinesterase activity, essential oil from flowers exhibited the highest activity (IC 50 =95 µg/mL). To our knowledge, this is the first report of acetylcholinesterase inhibition and antimicrobial activity of the Tunisian A. maritimus essential oils.

The objective was to achieve the extraction of polyphenolic components from this matrix which is considered a hazardous waste from the production of olive oil. The supercritical fluid used was carbon dioxide and the SFE studies were conducted in two stages, the first at a pressure of 200 bar and 40 ºC and the second stage at 300 bar, 45 ºC and using ethanol as co-solvent. In both cases the SFE was performed for 3 hours. The first stage was carried out to obtain a cleaner matrix and the second step was aimed at the components of interest. The overall mass yield obtained was 5.5 %. Preliminary HPLC screening of the samples obtained and also of the water in which the olives were preserved showed that the polyphenol compounds were mostly in the latter. Keywords: Supercritical CO 2 Extraction, olive pomace, polyphenols ResumoA técnica de Extração Supercrítica (ESC) foi usada para obter extractos de uma amostra, que pretendia simular o bagaço de azeitona, obtida de azeitonas em conserva. O objetivo era conseguir a extração de componentes polifenólicos desta matriz que é considerada um resíduo perigoso proveniente da produção de azeite. O fluido supercrítico usado foi o dióxido de carbono e os estudos de SFE foram realizados em duas fases: a primeira, a uma pressão de 200 bar e 40 ° C e a segunda a 300 bar, 45º C e usando etanol como co-solvente. Em ambos os casos, a SFE foi realizada durante 3 horas. A primeira fase foi realizada para obter uma matriz mais limpa e a segunda etapa tinha como alvo os componentes de interesse. O rendimento total em massa obtido foi de 5,5 %. O estudo preliminar, por HPLC, do perfil químico foi efectuado e o rastreio das amostras obtidas foi realizado, bem como o da água da conserva das azeitonas, e mostraram que os compostos polifenólicos estavam presentes principalmente neste último caso.
