Rose Bengal sensitized bilayered photoanode of nano-crystalline TiO2–CeO2 for dye-sensitized solar cell application

Abstract: The present work deals with the study of TiO 2-CeO 2 bilayered photoanode with low-cost Rose Bengal (RB) dye as sensitizer for dye-sensitized solar cell application. The recombination reactions are reduced in bilayered TiO 2-CeO 2 photoanode as compared to the singlelayered CeO 2 photoanode. Once the electrons get transferred from lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level of RB dye to the conduction band (CB) of TiO 2 , then the possibilities of recombination of electrons with oxidized dye molecules or oxidize… Show more

“…The synthesis of CeO 2 nanoparticles by precipitation method has been discussed by different researchers [20,32,33]. The nanocrystalline CeO 2 powder was prepared using Ce(NO 3 ) 3 •6H 2 O and NH 4 OH, where Ce(NO 3 ) 3 •6H 2 O was used as a source of Ce 4+ and NH 4 OH was the precipitant.…”

“…Great efforts are being focused on the development of DSSCs with semiconductor photoanode as replacement to TiO 2 and organic dyes as the sensitizer [17][18][19]. Researchers have used CeO 2 along with TiO 2 or ZnO as photoanode, either to suppress the recombination rate or as a mirror-like coating for absorption of maximum photons by dye [20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. There are few reports of directly using CeO 2 as photoanode in DSSCs [10].…”

“…To avoid or suppress these losses researchers are trying to use bi-layered materials such as TiO2-CeO2, [15][16][17] ZnO-CeO2, [18] TiO2-ZrO2, [19] TiO2-Nb2O5, [20] ZnO-Nb2O5 [21] etc.…”
