We comment on the meta-analysis by Mihura, Meyer, Dumitrascu, and Bombel (2013), which examined the validity of scores in Exner's Comprehensive System (CS) for the Rorschach. First, we agree there is compelling evidence that 4 categories of cognitive scores-the "Rorschach cognitive quartet"-are related to cognitive ability/impairment and thought disorder. We now feel comfortable endorsing the use of these scores in some applied and research settings. Second, we conducted new meta-analyses (k = 44) for the 4 noncognitive Rorschach scores with highest validity in the Mihura et al. findings. Unlike Mihura et al., we included unpublished dissertations (although we did not attempt to exhaustively unearth all unpublished studies), calculated correlations instead of semipartial correlations, and used the Rorschach International Norms for a larger proportion of comparisons. Our validity estimates for the Suicide Constellation and Weighted Sum of Color were similar to or even higher than those of Mihura et al., although we concluded that support for the Suicide Constellation is limited and that Weighted Sum of Color probably does not measure its intended target. Our validity estimates for Sum Shading and the Anatomy and X-ray score were much lower than those of Mihura et al. We conclude that their meta-analysis accurately reflects the published literature, but their exclusion of unpublished studies led to substantial overestimates of validity for some and perhaps many Rorschach scores. Therefore, the evidence is presently insufficient to justify using the CS to measure noncognitive characteristics such as emotionality, negative affect, and bodily preoccupations.

BackgroundThe bipolar-unipolar distinction in patients with a major depressive episode is the most important issue related to the diagnosis and treatment of mood disorders, but remains unresolved. This study was undertaken to compare bipolar and unipolar depression on Rorschach testing using the Comprehensive System with reference to healthy Japanese controls.MethodsPatients with bipolar or unipolar depression who had undergone the Rorschach test for routine clinical purposes were followed up naturalistically for a long period. Based on diagnostic confirmation after long-term follow-up, scores on this test for patients with bipolar and unipolar depression were compared with those published elsewhere for healthy Japanese controls.ResultsThe bipolar depression group showed significantly higher scores or positive findings in five variables of the Rorschach test, ie, WSum6, DR2 > 0, (CF + C) > FC + 2, PureC > 1, and Populars > 7, as assessed using the Comprehensive System, than did the unipolar depression group and healthy controls. These scores did not differ between the unipolar depression and control groups.ConclusionThe results of this study show thought disorder or cognitive slippage and marked laxness in modulating emotion in bipolar depression, indicating the psychopathological characteristics of bipolar disorder.

ResumoEste estudo tem por objetivo realizar uma metanálise comparando o resultado de variáveis indicadoras de relações interpessoais (HVI, Índice de Hipervigilância, CDI, Índice de Déficit Relacional, SumT, Soma das respostas de Textura, COP, Movimento Cooperativo, AG, Movimento Agressivo, p, Movimento Ativo e a, Movimento Passivo) em 14 países ocidentais (Itália, Argentina, Grécia, Finlândia, Dinamarca, Bélgica, Austrália, Estados Unidos, Espanha, Romênia, Portugal, Peru, Holanda e Brasil). Para isso, foram analisados 16 artigos de normatização do Sistema Compreensivo de Rorschach, comparando onze medidas diferentes entre os 14 países (HVI positivo, CDI=5, CDI=4, CDI positivo, SumT=0, SumT>1, COP=0, COP>2, AG=0, AG>2 e p>a+1). Os resultados apontam que a amostra brasileira está acima de 01 Desvio Padrão para as seguintes medidas: CDI=5, CDI=4, CDI positivo, AG=0 e p>a+1. Além disso, apresenta a maior medida para CDI=5, CDI=4, CDI positivo e AG=0 dentre todos os artigos analisados. Os dados indicam que os participantes da amostra brasileira apresentariam mais dificuldade para enfrentamento de problemas na demandas social do que os participantes das amostras dos outros países.Palavras-chave: metanálise; relações interpessoais; Teste de Rorschach. Metanalysis of Interpersonal Relationships in the Rorschach's Method In Western Countries AbstractThe aim of this study is to do a metanalysis of variables indicative interpersonal relationships result (HVI, Hypervigilance Index, CDI, Coping Deficit Index, SumT, Sum of the Texture's answers, COP, Cooperative Movement, AG, Aggressive Movement, p, Active Movement and, a, Passive Movement) in 14 western countries (Italy, Argentina, Greece, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, Australia, United States, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Peru, Holland and Brazil). For that, 16 Normative's papers of the Rorschach Comprehensive System were analyzed, comparing eleven different measures among the 14 countries (HVI positive, CDI=5, CDI=4, CDI positive, SumT=0, SumT>1, COP=0, COP>2, AG=0, AG>2 e p>a+1). The results are pointing that the Brazilian sample is above 01 standard deviation for the following measures: CDI=5, CDI=4, CDI positive, AG=0 e p>a+1. Brazil also presents the largest measure for: CDI=5, CDI=4, CDI positive e AG=0. The data indicate that the Brazilian sample have more difficulty contending with the natural demands of a social world than the samples of the other countries.
