Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is a perennial crop originated from tropical regions, divided into Criollo, Forastero, and Trinitario. Demand for cocoa has increased, but the productivity is still low. The increase in production could be achieved by improving crop management and using superior clones. RCC-70, RCC-71, and KKM-22 are recommended as the superior cocoa clones. Dead-end trench can reduce erosion and surface run-off as well as improve rooting and soil organic matter sequestration. The objectives of this research were to study the effects of dead-end trench application on morphological characters of roots and yields of three cocoa clones and to determine which cocoa clone(s) performed a signifificant yield increase with the application of dead-end trench. The research was conducted in August 2018–April 2019 at Pagilaran Ltd. cocoa plantation in North Segayung Production Unit, subdistrict Tulis, Batang, Central Java. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with two factors and three replications as block. The first factor was dead-end trench application (with and without dead-end trench application) and the second factor was cocoa clones (RCC-70, RCC-71, and KKM-22). This study showed that application of dead-end trench and clones significantly increased root fresh weight, root dry weight, seed fresh weight, and seed dry weight, but had no significant effect on fruit diameter, fruit length, root length, and root surface area. RCC-70 clone, coupled with the application of dead-end trench, resulted in the highest seed dry weight compared to RCC-71 and KKM-22 clones.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of hormones and fertilizers on the aptitude of grafting of four types of clones used in the seed fields for the creation, the regeneration, and the production of pods. The experimental design is a factorial trial (4 × 3 × 2 × 2) with hormone as the main block and other factors completely randomized within the blocks with three replicates. The aptitude of cocoa clones for grafting was assessed from 4320 grafted plants by recording survival rates, budding rates and number of leaves on a weekly basis from the 28th day after application of the hormones. Evaluation results indicated that there is a significant impact of clones, fertilizers, and grafting types on both the survival rate and growth parameters. Notably, the Trinitario ICS40 clone exhibited superior performance with an impressive 82.6% survival rate, a budding rate of 59.3%, and a total leaf count of 404. The different hormones did not have a significant impact on the measured parameters, whereas YaraMilla™ fertilizer demonstrated superior performance in enhancing the growth of grafted plants. Interestingly, side grafting displayed the highest survival rates (83.3, 69.4, 52.7 and 46.9% at 4 weeks, respectively) as well as a budding rate of 56%. However, it did not result in the highest number of leaves. This study represents the first report of grafting cocoa clones at the SODECAO experimental farm, and these findings open up possibilities for the propagation of disease-resistant clones.

Cannabis sativa (L.) is an annual herbaceous species which has been extensively cultivated and used as a medicinal plant and for recreational purposes. Its medicinal value is primarily attributed to a group of secondary metabolites called phytocannabinoids, which are mainly concentrated in the essential oils of unfertilized female flowers. Asexual reproduction allows for the offspring of plant material while maintaining the genetic characteristics of the mother plant. The aim of the research was to improve the vegetative propagation process of Cannabis sativa (L.) cv. Eco-2, which has characteristics of medicinal phytocannabinoid producers, using auxin plant growth regulators (NAA and IBA) at different doses. The study was conducted under greenhouse conditions in the municipality of Pesca (Colombia). Doses of 400, 800 and 1,000 mg L-1 and a control without application were evaluated for plant height, stem diameter, number of branches, root volume and length, and rooting percentage. The best treatment was obtained with the application of NAA at a dose of 800 mg L-1, which resulted in a rooting percentage of 86.6%, a root length and volume of 9.0 cm and 5.0 cm3, and an increase in the length of the cutting by 3.8 cm, with significant differences compared to the treatment without application, after 4 weeks of planting. The use of auxin plant growth regulators becomes an alternative with high potential for the propagation of medicinal cannabinoid-producing plants.
