Root-Knot Nematode Species Associated with Horticultural Crops in the Island of Azores, Portugal

Abstract: Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) are an economically important group of plant pests present throughout the world. In particular, root-knot nematodes (RKN), sedentary endoparasites of a wide variety of economically important hosts with the ability to survive in temperate regions. During 2020–2021 an extensive survey of Meloidogyne spp. was undertaken on the island of São Miguel Azores, Portugal. A total of 80 samples comprising 23 species of plants were collected from 13 localities in 4 districts of the island. … Show more

“…For routine maintenance, 1 L black plastic pots are filled with a sterilized mixture of local soil, sand, and substrate (1:1:1), watered to 70% of maximum water holding capacity and maintained in these conditions for 1 week for soil stabilization. Tomato seedlings, obtained by germinating commercially acquired certified seeds on hydrated filter paper, are transferred to the pots and kept at 25 ± 1 • C. For nematode infection of the tomato seedlings, RKN egg masses were handpicked from the provided root galls and added to the soil in the vicinity to the roots of tomato plants at an early growth stage, namely at the second unfolded leaf on the main shoot stage of development, and maintained in a growth chamber at 25 ± 1 • C [26]. After ca.…”

“…This genus includes more than 100 species [4], which infect more than 3000 plant families [5]. The most common types are M. javanica, M. incognita, M. hapla, M. arenaria, where the percentage of land contaminated with this pest constitutes about 95% of the total agricultural land in the world [6]. The type M. incognita is widespread globally, infecting a wide range of plant hosts and predominates in cold, tropical and subtropical regions [7].…”

“…Nematodes of the Meloidogyne genus, commonly known as root-knot nematodes, are major pests of economically important crops worldwide (Rusinque et al 2022). In Brazil, two Meloidogyne species deserve attention for their extensive e-ISSN 1983-4063 -www.agro.ufg.br/pat -Pesq.…”
