Root growth responses to mechanical impedance are regulated by a network of ROS, ethylene and auxin signalling in Arabidopsis

Abstract: SummaryThe growth and development of root systems, essential for plant performance, is influenced by mechanical properties of the substrate in which the plants grow. Mechanical impedance, such as by compacted soil, can reduce root elongation and limit crop productivity. To understand better the mechanisms involved in plant root responses to mechanical impedance stress, we investigated changes in the root transcriptome and hormone signalling responses of Arabidopsis to artificial root barrier systems in vitro. We… Show more

“…The higher accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells/organs is considered a hallmark of abiotic stress (Farnese, Menezes-Silva, Gusman and Oliveira 2016). The increased ROS and NO staining of HS and VS root tips are consistent with the assumption that hardness is perceived as a stress signal (Jacobsen. Jervis, Xu, Topping and Lindsey, 2021).…”

“…Frontal tip impedance inhibits root growth and increases root hair formation, whereas lateral impedance induces root thickening and can even change stem cell niche organization (Potocka et al, 2011;Feng et al, 2020). In this issue of New Phytologist, Jacobsen et al (2021; pp. 225-242) deepen our understanding of the spatiotemporal regulation of the root developmental response to mechanical impedance.…”
