Odontostomat., 8(2):177-183, 2014. RESUMEN:La endodoncia estudia la morfología y fisiología del sistema de canales de un diente. Su objetivo principal es prevenir lesiones pulpares y periodontales y tratar las ya instaladas. La determinación de la longitud de trabajo es una de las etapas más importantes del tratamiento de endodoncia. Imprecisiones en este proceso pueden favorecer la ocurrencia de accidentes y complicaciones postoperatorias. Esta revisión de la literatura describe la importancia de la anatomía dentaria aplicada a endodoncia y su estudio en cada población, además de presentar las principales técnicas para determinar la longitud de trabajo. La longitud de trabajo limita la preparación y obturación del canal radicular. Este límite debe ser la constricción apical. Diversos métodos de determinación han sido utilizados, donde el uso de localizadores apicales resulta ser el método más confiable. No obstante, es necesario conocer la morfología del sistema de canales en este proceso. Las longitudes radiculares referenciales a nivel mundial fueron publicadas por Ingle & Bakland. No existen estudios que determinen la longitud de trabajo para cada diente en población sudamericana; tampoco los hay que determinen la longitud de trabajo en pacientes con localizadores apicales. Estudiar y conocer la anatomía radicular es un requisito fundamental para un tratamiento de endodoncia exitoso. Es esperable que existan diferencias entre las descripciones anatómicas dentarias clásicas y la anatomía dentaria de poblaciones específicas. Surge la necesidad de determinar parámetros de normalidad en cada población a nivel mundial.PALABRAS CLAVE: endodoncia, raíz dentaria, tratamiento de canales, cavidad dentinaria pulpar, ápice dentario.

The morphological diversity of the inner anatomy of root canals in human permanent teeth is an issue mainly described in endodontics research. In recent years, it is a relatively new point in anthropological studies because it varies by sex, geographic and ethnic circumstances. An unusual number of root canals or their specific systems can differentiate populations around the world. The multiplicity of available methods for detecting root canal systems helps to better understand their complexity; however, most cannot be applied to anthropology due to limitations that occur in the bioarcheological material. Thorough knowledge of the heterogeneity and internal anatomy of the root canals supplies numerous classification systems proposed and improved over the years by many authors. A limited number of studies in the anthropological literature and future research will shed light onto the internal tooth morphology in historical populations. The aim of this paper is to describe various classification systems of root canals applied in endodontics. However, due to the often poor state of preservation and damage of archaeological derived remains, it seems that the best method is the approach that is the simplest and least complicated.

<b>Morphological Variations of the Root Canal System in C-shaped Roots of the Mandibular Second Molar in a Japanese Population </b>

Morphological variations of the root canal system of C-shaped roots in mandibular second molars of young Japanese patients (aged 20 to 29 years old) were analyzed by using multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) in order to clarify the entire picture from the orifice to the apex. CT images were reconstructed so that the axial image was inclined perpendicular to the long axis of teeth. C-shaped roots were more frequently found in females (54.0%) than in males (36.7%) (p<0.01). One root canal was most frequently found on the coronal side, and the root canal numbers increased to the apex. Thus, in many cases at the coronal level the canal formed letterC , but it ramified into increasingly smaller canals towards the apex. The complex configuration of the root canals may be related to various degree of fusion in the roots. The results of this study might be used for understanding the nature of C-shaped root canals.
