Purpose: This article identifies an issue in mathematics education, that is, the perceived lack of emphasis in recent times of the roles that the “person” plays in the development of mathematics. The purpose is to examine how the values/valuing might contribute to addressing the issue. Design/Approach/Methods: “Data” were collected from several purposeful conversations among the three authors. The conversations were audio-recorded and machine-transcribed. The transcript was then subjected to content analysis to identify themes. Findings: The data analysis yielded two novel approaches to raising learners’ awareness of the humanness of mathematics. One would be to reframe the values that are operationalized when mathematics is taught and learnt, as processes of valuing which teachers and students engage in, respectively. The second approach would be to acknowledge that writers of mathematics/mathematicians are not simply presenting knowledge but are also acting as mentors conveying and transmitting messages about the discipline. Originality/Value: The involvement of the “person” in the development of mathematics is not new knowledge, though it can be made more visible in mathematics education. This article identifies two approaches—valuing and mentoring—which are novel in that they are already part of the pedagogical process and thus, accessible.

This article examines the origins of the Roman alliance system in the second half of the 4th century. The significance of the allies for the creation of a Mediterranean empire is undisputed; allied troops provided the Roman Republic with a manpower reservoir unmatched by any of its opponents. However, the stunning achievement of incorporating defeated foes into the military in equal numbers to Roman troops has been somewhat neglected and been taken as a given fact. A careful analysis of the years following the Latin War and the Samnite Wars reveals a constellation which does not suggest that the immediate creation of a more or less beneficial system of alliances was a primary Roman objective. Instead it will be argued that the evidence indicates a rather different development, where the challenge of organising and integrating the captured territory was a dynamic and at times arduous process, for which the setbacks – and indeed the crisis – of the so-called Second Samnite War served as a major catalyst.

In narrating Rome’s victory over Capua in the Hannibalic War, Livy engages substantially with Cicero’s three orations De Lege Agraria as an intertext, and in particular with Cicero’s argument that moral corruption caused political dysfunction in Capua. Livy makes this a central theme, not only of his narrative of the city’s fall in Book 26, but of earlier events in the city, as early as Book 4. Livy’s portrayal of popularis demagoguery in Capua also evokes Cicero’s arguments against popularis agrarian laws. Capua is thus set up, via intertextual engagement with Cicero, as an ominous precursor to Rome in Livy’s day.
