The purpose of this study was to identify, describe and interpret group processes occurring in tutorials in problem-based learning. Another aim was to investigate if a combination of Steiner's (Steiner, I. D. (1972). Group process and productivity. New York: Academic Press.) theory of group work and Bion's (Bion, W. R. (1961). Experiences in groups. New York: Tavistock Publications Limited.) theory of work and regression in groups may be a fruitful way to interpret and explain group dynamics in problem-based learning.Data have been collected through a multi-strategy approach. The principal method for data gathering was qualitative. The quantitative method was used as a follow-up study. The data gathering methods used were observation, questionnaire and interviews.The results disclose that it is possible to give a comprehensive and descriptive picture of the group processes that occur in tutorials. The results also show that a combination of Steiner's and Bion's theories may be a fruitful way to describe, interpret and explain group dynamics in tutorial groups. By combining the theories a scheme for understanding group processes was created. The combination, in form of a new model, can be considered as a way of developing the theories and at the same time, it offers a theoretical tool for research purposes. The combination represents a new way of categorising group processes and can hopefully provide a better understanding of interactional dynamics in groups and account for greater explanation value with respect to group processes.

From routine to uncertainty: Leading adaptable teams within integrated operations

My original contribution to frontline team knowledge is that efficient adaption stems from a continuous focus upon internal interaction patterns. This means that focusing upon task, procedures, and individual expertise is not enough to enable teams to excel through uncertain contexts and ambiguous tasks. To be able to extract and combine the unique skills and knowledge from each individual teammate, teams must be able to utilize a broad spectrum of behaviors; establish and accept a deep collective understanding of each other's skills, attitudes and knowledge; balance individuals' influence; and ensure efficient leadership perspectives.This means that advanced team interactions build on a collective commitment and the will to develop. As such, the team leader is responsible for enabling the advanced team dynamics, but the teammates also have to contribute to efficient leadership.The empirical contributions stem from The Royal Norwegian Naval Academy (RNoNA) and the Norwegian oil and gas company Statoil ASA, which both build their operations around efficient teamwork. While the purpose of these two organizations are clearly different, they both have to deal with high-risk environments, as well as teamwork that ensures adoption and innovation in rapidly changing contexts.Part I of the thesis provides the theoretical foundations and insights into trends in team research, and brings the findings from the four empirical papers into the broader discussion.The first part ends with suggestions for further research, practical implications, and concluding remarks. Part II presents the four empirical articles that investigate various aspects closely related to the team's ability to adapt and excel through uncertainty. These papers originate from gaps in my literature review, as well as the research partners' interests.ii Executive SummaryThis thesis investigates various aspects that are important for developing teams that are able to excel through uncertainty. It is possible to read the Part I as a short summary of the whole work. The first part begins with a literature review that can be used to understand the various trends in the team literature, and thereby help leaders to understand the implications from the different perspectives. At the same time, the perspective I advocate builds on the premise of enabling teams to adapt to their contextual demands, which means that a focus upon the teams' internal interplay is highly important. The second part of the thesis consists of four separate articles that visit topics such as team building; team insights and perceptions; the distribution of influence, and leadership perspectives and structures. These articles can be read separately, but reading the whole thesis will help to give a broader insight.For many leaders, some of the suggestions will be inconsistent with long-held leadership-and team theories. Resumo: A Internet vem modificando as relações sociais e comerciais ao longo do tempo, tal como o nascimento do comércio eletrônico, sendo responsável pelo surgimento de novos modelos de negócios, bem como de compradores e empreendedores. Esta mudança tem sido consolidada através das mídias sociais, em que as pessoas têm se utilizado das redes de relacionamento não apenas para suprir a necessidade de se relacionar pessoalmente, mas também para comprar, vender e trocar produtos numa velocidade nunca antes vista na história da web. Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar de que maneira ocorrem as transações comerciais no espaço das mídias sociais em nove grupos de venda e troca entre membros do Rio Grande do Sul, especialmente da região da cidade de Canoas/RS e arredores, no ambiente do Facebook. A pesquisa tem caráter exploratório, descritivo com abordagem qualitativa e como método a análise de conteúdo. O levantamento de dados foi realizado através de observação participante e análise documental de artigos, periódicos e reportagens referentes ao assunto. THE C2C COMMERCE ON THE SOCIAL NETWORKS: AN ANALYSIS OF GROUPS ON FACEBOOKAbstract: The Internet has been changing the social and trade relations over the time, as the birth of ecommerce. Thus, it's been responsible for the emergence of new business models, buyers and entrepreneurs. A change which has been consolidated through social media, where people have used the social networks not only to meet the needs to relate personally, but also to buy, sell and exchange products in such a fast way which has never been seen in web history before. This study aims to analyze how informal commercial transactions occurs in social media, into nine groups of sale and exchange between members of Rio Grande do Sul, especially in Canoas City and area, at Facebook space. This research is exploratory, descriptive with qualitative approach and method as the content analysis. Data collection was carried out through participant observation and document analysis of articles, journals and reports related to the subject. Ten thematic categories were found. They reveal subjective and objective aspects of this type of trade.
