Roles, Relationships, And Groups In Organizations: Some Conclusions And Recommendations

Abstract: Based on a review of the small groups literature on roles, relationships, and groups in organizations, some suggestions are made concerning the ways that research findings might be integrated into a more general theory of groups. Examples of the application of Parsons's analysis of four functions (meaning, resources, integration, and goal attainment) to small group phenomena are given to illustrate some of the possibilities for the extension of one of several current theoretical perspectives. “…Traditional research on group and group work have found that group variables such as roles (in particular leadership) interaction, communication, development and productivity (Hare 2003) as well as size, composition, supervisory style, climate and interaction (Boalt Boëthius et al 2006) might provide an important link to the understanding of group work and processes within and between groups. This article is an effort to address the issue of group processes in PBL using results from traditional research on group and teamwork that might provide important information on group dynamics in tutorial groups.…”

“…The extent to which a team member is able to display behavior supporting each of the four group functions emerge from what they feel comfortable with [45]. If group members have strong expectations of another person's behavior, they often unconsciously adjust their actions to reinforce the expected behavior.…”

“…The control function, which allocates team assets and clarifies goals, is supported by active, analytical, task-oriented, and autocratic behaviors; the nurture function, which creates the group identify, involves active, caring, empathic, and spontaneous behavior. The opposition function triggers the team's corrective activities, and is maintained by active, critical, assertive, and self-sufficient behavior; the loyalty function sustains the group norms and is displayed by passive, conforming, and obedient behavior. The extent to which a team member is able to display behavior supporting each of the four group functions emerge from what they feel comfortable with [45]. “…Hare (2003) identifica que uma das características de um grupo é aceitar um conjunto de normas que define os papéis que serão desempenhados por cada indivíduo e que permite manter a coesão entre os integrantes. Nesse contexto, todos os artigos apontam para a presença dos moderadores -pessoas que têm o controle do grupo, podendo incluir ou excluir postagens e pessoas -e das regras que vão desde o tipo de produto a ser negociado dentro do espaço até a forma como a negociação deve ser conduzida.…”
