Roles of the transcriptional regulators Fts1, YlNrg1, YlTup1, and YlSsn6 in the repression of the yeast‐to‐filament transition in the dimorphic yeast Yarrowia lipolytica

Abstract: Like other dimorphic fungi, Y. lipolytica can switch its morphology from the oval-shaped yeast form to the filamentous forms, which include elongated rod-like cells, pseudohyphae, and hyphae. The yeast-to-filament transition can be induced by environmental factors such as poor carbon sources, nitrogen starvation, alkaline pH, or low oxygen (Perez-Campo & Dominguez, 2001; Ruiz-Herrera & Sentandreu, 2002). The formation of filaments allows cells to expand into new environments, which is thought to be critical fo… Show more

“…They performed the deletion of the gen and RNA-seq analysis. Nrg1 turn out not to be a key player for the dimorphic switch, but the available transcriptomic data (40) proved to be crucial for the interpretation of our results. Among the genes repressed by Nrg1 are 5 encoding erythrose reductases: YALI0B07117g, YALI0B21780, YALI0A15906, YALI0D04092, YALI0E18348.…”

“…6A and B). The transcript levels of MAR1 ( YALI0B02266g ) and HOY1 were repressed by Tup1 and Ssn6, both of which are transcriptional repressors involved in filamentous growth (40). These data suggest that Mar1 functions downstream of Tup1 and Ssn6 and upstream of Hoy1 in morphological regulation in Y. lipolytica .…”

“…lipolytica is a dimorphic yeast that changes its cell morphology between the yeast form and pseudohyphal or hyphal form in response to various environmental conditions, including pH and nutrition (34). The cell morphology is regulated by transcription factors, such as Mhy1 and Hoy1, that promote the transition from the yeast to hyphal form and by transcription factors, such as Znc1, Tec1, Fts1, and Nrg1, that promote the transition from the hyphal to yeast form (35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(40). Nonetheless, the entire picture of the transcriptional regulatory network of cell morphogenesis in Y. lipolytica remains to be established.…”
