Roles of Systemic Intermediaries in Transition Processes

Abstract: We note the emergence of a new type of intermediary organization, which functions at system or network level, in contrast to traditional intermediary organizations that operate mainly bilaterally. These "systemic intermediaries" are important in long-term and complex changes, such as "transitions" to sustainable development, which require the coordinated effort of industry, policy makers, research institutes and others. We use the Systems of Innovation approach to characterize the roles of traditional and syst… Show more

“…Intermediating third parties (cf. van Lente et al, 2003;Altenburg and Pegels, 2012;Kivimaa, 2014) could ensure motivational and strategic alignment of different partners and coordinate the collaboration. Furthermore, these parties could help to overcome the (causality) dilemma where both, potential off-taker and investor, require a proof-of-concept and existing contracts by mediating between the different actors.…”

“…Innovation intermediation literature appears as a subset of innovation studies, aiming at understanding the actors, repertoires, domains, and extent of intermediation practice [43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50]. Another scholar stream, less focused on agency, brings about the discussion about knowledge mediation started by Latour [51] and intermediation [52][53][54].…”

“…A number of studies have explored the need for system level intermediaries to support the transition from intra to inter-organizational networks of innovation (Klerkx & Leeuwis 2009;van Lente et al 2003;Todeva 2013). As outlined in a study by Kivimaa (2014), a systemic intermediary supports innovation at the higher system level by articulating demand, developing strategy, identifying, aligning and mobilising actors, building consensus, managing complex and long term innovation projects and creating an environment for learning by doing and using.…”
