Roles of noncoding RNAs in preeclampsia

Abstract: Preeclampsia (PE) is an idiopathic disease that occurs during pregnancy. It comprises multiple organ and system damage, and can seriously threaten the safety of the mother and infant throughout the perinatal period. As the pathogenesis of PE is unclear, there are few specific remedies. Currently, the only way to eliminate the clinical symptoms is to terminate the pregnancy. Although noncoding RNA (ncRNA) was once thought to be the “junk” of gene transcription, it is now known to be widely involved in pathologi… Show more

“…Recent technological advancements empowered transcriptome exploration and led to the discovery of numerous non-coding RNA species (small nuclear RNA, small nucleolar RNAs, telomerase RNA, tRNA-derived fragments, tRNA halves, microRNA, small interfering RNA, piwi-interacting RNA, enhancer RNA, long non-coding RNA, and circular RNA), of which microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are the most investigated [ 25 ].…”

“…A growing body of evidence supports the involvement of placenta expressed miRNAs and lncRNAs in the regulation of crucial processes of placenta development and function. The complete biological roles of the most miRNAs and lncRNA in placenta remain scarce, nevertheless, it has been unequivocally shown that altered expression of numerous miRNAs as well as lncRNAs in placenta, is related to pathophysiological processes that occur in PE [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ].…”

“…It has been reported that circRNAs are significantly involved in regulating cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation ( Jia and Li, 2019 ; Chen et al, 2021 ; Gao et al, 2021 ; Sun et al, 2021 ). High levels of circRNA_33186 have been reported to promote apoptosis and inhibit proliferation in osteoarthritis ( Zhou et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Several miRNAs are specific to placental pathologies; for example, hsa-miR-210, which is influenced by the expression of the HIF-1⍺ hypoxia response gene, shows increased expression in preeclamptic placentas when compared to controls (A. Chen et al, 2021 ; Sun et al, 2021 ; Frazier et al, 2020 ). Moreover, recent studies have revealed miRNA isoforms (isomiRs) that have variations in their mature miRNA sequences, which further expands the repertoire of mRNAs targeted for regulation.…”
