Roles of Endocannabinoids and Endocannabinoid-Like Molecules in Energy Homeostasis and Metabolic Regulation: A Nutritional Perspective

Abstract: The endocannabinoid system is involved in signal transduction in mammals. It comprises principally G protein-coupled cannabinoid receptors and their endogenous agonists, called endocannabinoids, as well as the enzymes and transporters responsible for the metabolism of endocannabinoids. Two arachidonic acid–containing lipid molecules, arachidonoylethanolamide (anandamide) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, function as endocannabinoids. N-acylethanolamines and monoacylglycerols, in which the arachidonic acid chain is r… Show more

“…The endocannabinoid system (ECS) modulates many physiological processes, including the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and immune systems, pain, learning, memory, perception, mood, appetite, metabolism, emotions, and sleep [22,112,113,[277][278][279][280][281][282][283][284][285]. The bioactive endocannabinoid lipid mediators have potent anti-inflammatory activities [286][287][288][289][290][291].…”

“…THC can also activate the CB2 receptors expressed on immune cells and mediate anti-inflammatory effects [ 17 , 18 ]. The endocannabinoids, which are host-derived lipid hormones, are found in all tissues, organs, and bodily fluids, and control a wide range of physiological functions, including appetite, pain, sleep, mood, and memory [ 19 , 20 ]. The two most well-studied endocannabinoids are the arachidonic acid derivatives, N -arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG).…”

“…Generally speaking, one may conclude that increased levels of AEA and decreased levels of OEA, PEA and SEA are associated with increased feeding behavior and reduced thermogenesis as well as increased markers of inflammation in adipose tissue and insulin resistance, as recently and extensively reviewed [140,141].…”
