Role of yoga therapy on lipid profile in patients of hypertension and prehypertension

Abstract: Background: Hypertension and dyslipidemia are one of the most prevalent cardiovascular disorders affecting 20% of world’s population. There is emerging data that yoga therapies may be useful in managing modest elevations in BP. Yoga, specific yogic exercise (Sudarshan kriya) taught as a training protocol under Art of living course (AOL), is especially attractive as a candidate therapy in the management of elevated BP because of its combination of gentle physical activity. Hence, this study was undertaken to co… Show more

“…Two studies studied the effects of yoga on lipid profile including their high density lipoproteins (HDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL), very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), triglycerides, and total cholesterol (TC) levels [ 11 , 18 ]. One study solely included the lipid profile values but was included in the review [ 11 ]. The main outcomes were not studied in this study but, if excluded, would have biased the review.…”

“…Yoga and breathing practices have been known to stabilize the HDL secretion and hence can be a preventive for diabetes and related metabolic disorders. [ 19 ] Also, through enhancement in HDL, yoga may also prevent cardiovascular diseases. [ 20 ]…”

“…2018 found a significant effect of Sudarshan kriya on blood lipid level in hypertensive participants. [ 1 5 ] Alterations in the ratio of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), is one of the major risk factors for many non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Earlier randomized controlled studies have shown that practicing yoga-based mind–body techniques can normalize elevated concentrations of lipid values as compared to control groups.…”

“…There are a few studies on lipid profiles in T2DM patients [ 27 , 28 ], but there are none that have examined the normalizing effect of yoga on lipid values. This requires a large sample size from diverse community cohorts, which is challenging.…”
