Role of Wearable Sensors with Machine Learning Approaches in Gait Analysis for Parkinson's Disease Assessment: A Review

Abstract: Gait analysis, a way of assessing the manner of walking, is considered a significant criterion in diagnosing movement disorder. Various factors contribute to the alterations in gait patterns, of which neurodegenerative related disorders play a major role. Subjects affected by Parkinson's disease (PD) suffer from numerous gait-related disturbances, eventually worsening the Quality of Life. Artificial intelligence-based tools have shown great interest in computer-assisted diagnosis with the recent advancements i… Show more

“…The gait disorders are also important factors affecting the quality of life of PD patients, and walking occupies most of the exercise time in daily life 21,22 . Therefore, for PD patients with gait disorders, passive detection of motor performance has been proposed in many studies to achieve the goal of long-term monitoring 21,23 .…”

“…Flexible pressure sensors are highly desirable for industrial wearable electronic devices in human motion monitoring and healthcare detection. From the practical view of points, the simple manufacturing processes, excellent mechanical robustness, high sensitivity, wide pressure ranges, and fast response time are required for an ideal pressure sensor. Based on the sensing mechanism, there are four categories of pressure sensors, including piezoelectric sensor, capacitive sensor, triboelectric sensor, and piezoresistive sensor (PRS). Nowadays, piezoresistive thin-film sensors are the dominant choice of pressure sensing systems for industrial wearable applications due to their simple processing condition, low production cost, easy signal collection, and moderate sensitivity. In principle, an applied external pressure onto a typical PRS can be transduced into a corresponding resistance signal by changing the deformation of sensing materials. , However, commonly used thin-film PRS shows little mechanical flexibility due to the use of intrinsically rigid sensing materials.…”
