Role of vascular endothelial growth factor and angiopoietin systems in serum of Crohnʼs disease patients

Abstract: In comparison with healthy controls, CD patients were found to have an active angiogenic profile, as detected by significant alterations in levels of angiogenesis soluble markers. These patients did not differ in serum levels of angiogenic factors according to phenotypic disease behavior.

“…53,67,72 These findings were supported by the data from human studies in CD. 73,74 Understanding the regulation and dysregulation of those angiogenic factors may provide insight to the pathogenesis and treatment of CD. Blood vessels and their endothelia play a crucial role in mucosal immune homeostasis through the tight regulation of leukocyte migration from the intravascular space to the interstitial space.…”

“…In this preliminary study, and as previously described in patients with Crohn's disease [31], it appears that the molecules that favor the stability and maturation of vascular networks during developmental angiogenesis such a Ang1 were under-expressed in UC patients. On the contrary, destabilizing ligand Ang2 and the most critical regulator of the angiogenic process, VEGF, were up-regulated, at least at the level of circulating proteins.…”
