Role of the UV absorber as a matrix in matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometric analysis of a mixture of a UV absorber and a stabilizer

Abstract: A mixture of a UV absorber (Tinuvin 234 or Tinuvin 329) and a UV stabilizer (Tinuvin 770) was analyzed using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) without any matrix. Fragmentation patterns of the UV absorbers and stabilizer were also investigated. The mass spectra showed the [M+H](+) ions and some fragment ions. Tinuvin 234, Tinuvin 329, and Tinuvin 770 generated three (m/z 119, 370, 432), one (m/z 252), and two (m/z 124 and 140) fragment ions, respectively. These fragment i… Show more

“…Then, the reactions between the radicals generated the gel. 27 Correspondingly, the UV stabilizers, whose photostabilizing mechanisms were shown in Scheme 1, [45][46][47] were able to decrease the gel formation. Figure 3 revealed the gel content of samples before and after UV irradiation.…”

“…[9][10][11][12][13][14][15] In general, the UV absorbers absorb UV wavelength between 295 and 400 nm, so they can potentially play a role as a matrix in MALDI analysis. 16,17 In this study, the UV absorbers were employed as the matrix to analyze polystyrene (PS) using MALDI-MS. The UV absorbers absorb UV radiation well, are not expensive, and are easily available materials.…”

“…[20][21][22] UV absorbers can be directly analyzed without any matrix only by the N 2 laser radiation. 23,24 Since the UV absorbers absorb UV radiation well, are not expensive, and are easily available materials, they will be potential matrices for MALDI-MS analysis using a UV laser. In the present work, novel matrix systems for the MALDI-MS analysis of polystyrene (PS) using UV absorbers and a UV stabilizer were investigated.…”
