Role of the T2Dx magnetic resonance assay in patients with suspected bloodstream infection: a single-centre real-world experience

Abstract: Background T2Dx was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the rapid detection of a modified panel of ESKAPE bacterial species or Candida spp. causing bloodstream infection (BSI). Patients and methods We performed a retrospective, observational study from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019 of all hospitalised patients with suspected BSI who underwent assessment using T2Dx in addition to standard blood culture (BC). T2-positive patien… Show more

“…In addition, the detection limit is very low, 1-3 cfu/ml whole blood [120]. This method has a high sensitivity (91.1-100%) and specificity (97.8%-98.9%) for those species [121][122][123][124].…”

“…We observed a low number of antifungal initiation based on a positive T2Candida alone, consistent with the high specificity observed and with a previous report of lower inappropriate antimicrobial use when T2Candida and T2Bacteria were used to diagnose bloodstream infections. 18 Due to the low number of confirmed cases of IC, we did not formally report sensitivity, but it was evident that not all IC cases resulted in a positive T2Candida result. Previous studies have indicated higher test sensitivity when compared with proven candidaemia (71%–91%), 6 , 12 highlighting the importance of defining test characteristics in different clinical settings and the variability in gold standard definitions used for Candida infections.…”
