Role of the spectral shape of quantum correlations in two-photon virtual-state spectroscopy

Abstract: The true role of entanglement in two-photon virtual-state spectroscopy (Saleh et al 1998 Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 3483), a two-photon absorption spectroscopic technique that can retrieve information about the energy level structure of an atom or a molecule, is controversial. The consideration of closely related techniques, such as multidimensional pump-probe spectroscopy (Roslyak et al 2009 Phys. Rev. A 79, 063409), suggests that spectroscopic information might also be retrieved by using uncorrelated pairs of photo… Show more

“…However, it turns out that the effect depends crucially on the tails of the spectral distribution in Eq. (49) (de J Leon- Montiel et al, 2013). The sinc-function in the two-photon wavefunction (51) has a long Lorentzian tail ∼ 1/ω, which covers extremely far off-resonant intermediate states.…”

“…Applications to spectroscopy received considerable attention in experiments [6][7][8][9] as well as in theoretical works [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. These prospects necessitate the adaption of quantum information concepts to spectroscopic applications.…”

“…This is possibly due to the fact that TPA is a third order nonlinear process in which four light fields are intertwined in complicated ways with various time intervals. Some proposed mathematical models in the literature primarily deal with the case of monochromatic excitation [10][11][12], while current studies of TPA use ultra-short laser pulse possessing with very broad spectral bandwidth. It is also necessary to consider the effect of higher order spectral phase for short pulses.…”
