Role of the Metal‐Oxide Support in the Catalytic Activity of Pd Nanoparticles for Ethanol Electrooxidation in Alkaline Media

Abstract: The promotional role of oxide supports (CeO2, SnO2, TiO2) on ethanol electrooxidation in alkaline media over Pd nanoparticles (NPs) is presented and compared to Pd on carbon. XPS revealed a shift to lower binding energy of the Pd 3d peak when Pd NPs were deposited on metal oxides, implying a charge transfer from the oxides to the Pd. The catalytic activity of the supported NPs for ethanol electrooxidation was assessed by using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The electrooxidation products were monitor… Show more

“…In order to quantitative comparison of electrocatalytic active sites, the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) was analyzed on the basis of the PdO reduction coulombic charge. [20] The computed ECSA of Pd/BC-2 is 67.0 m 2 g À 1 , which is higher than that of Pd/BC-1 (62.7 m 2 g À 1 ) and Pd/BC-3 (47.8 m 2 g À 1 ) and is about 2.5 times as large as commercial Pd/C (27.0 m 2 g À 1 ).…”

“…The vertical coordinates of current density are standardized via the Pd chemical mass loading. [20] Furthermore, the ratio of j f /jr can be expressed to evaluate the poisoning tolerance of carbonaceous species for as produced catalysts. One is the peak current density in the forward anodic scan (j f ) and another is the peak current density in the backward scan (j r ).…”

“…Herein, the spectra for the species on the electrode surface and spectra of the sum species in the thin cavity will be referred to as "surface" and "bulk solution" species, respectively. 67 Prior to the measurement of ethanol electro-oxidation species spectra, it is important to ensure that there is no atmospheric CO 2 and water vapor in the optical path, which would not only decrease the infrared (IR) intensity but also would contribute to observed spectra features. The presence of CO 2 is especially critical, because it is one of the anticipated ethanol oxidation products.…”
