The barn owls (Tyto alba), as a biological control for the rat population, are relatively effective and safe for the oil palm ecosystem. So nowadays, many oil palm plantations are trying to introduce it to reduce the use of rodenticides. This paper’s objective is to evaluate a decade of T. alba introduction in ca 80,000 ha oil palm plantations in Central Kalimantan since the initial releasing three pairs of T. alba in July 2011. We use a quantitative descriptive method to provide the primary data on a monthly monitoring basis, i.e., the T. alba population, including its chick and eggs; the number of barn owl boxes occupied; rat damage percentage and the number of rat baiting applications. The population increment during the year 2011 to 2012 was retarded. However, since the year 2013, the population of barn owl population rapidly increased using a combination of self-released barn owl distribution from field barn owl boxes. It assisted augmentation from barn owl hatchery methods. Based on the monthly census in December 2022, the occupancy rates reached 75% from 4,234 boxes; occupied by 6,390 owls, 1,665 chicks, and 1,531 eggs. The established population of T. alba in an oil palm plantation in Central Kalimantan has reduced the rat damage percentage below the threshold level of 5%. It has no rat-baiting application (zero rat bait).

One of the key ecosystem services offered by avian biodiversity within agricultural landscapes is natural predation. Nonetheless, the current use of biological control agents such as farmland birds in oil palm plantations is relatively limited. This study aimed to assess the potential roles of avian biodiversity, particularly insectivores that provide natural predation against oil palm herbivorous insects. We also investigated the influence of local‐ and landscape‐scale variables on foliage damage (crown or frond). Our data showed that crown damage decreased with increasing farmland bird richness (overall and insectivore), shrub cover, dried biomass and elevation, but increased with epiphyte cover, oil palm height and distance to continuous forest. Frond damage was negatively related to bird richness (overall, insectivore and non‐insectivore) and non‐insectivore abundance, elevation and shrub cover, while increased with insectivorous abundance, epiphyte cover, oil palm height and distance to continuous forest. We also found that plantations (≥50 ha) were more susceptible to foliage damage from pest insects than smallholdings (<50 ha). There was no evidence that indicate the influence of forest patches on foliage damage. Synthesis and applications. Our study highlights the economic value of conserving biodiversity, most notably, farmland birds and continuous forests with respect to biological control of defoliating pests and maintaining yield productivity in oil palm cultivation. Growers, particularly major plantation companies should make oil palm farming more biodiversity‐friendly in order to increase the number of biological control agents such as birds.

Rodent pest is known for its detrimental impact on agriculture where it is responsible for for more than 10% of crop loss across worldwide. Although a number of conventional rodent-control methods such as electric current, fumigation, trapping and rodenticide are applied, however there are growing concerns related to their effectiveness and safety concerns. Joint Operating Body Pertamina – Medco E&P Tomori Sulawesi (JOB Tomori) initiated community development program to address this issue by utilizing Sulawesi Masked Owl as agricultural rodent control. Starting from 2017, at approximately 84 artificial nest boxes and 175 perch pillars were installed in paddy fields located in 3 subdistrict in Banggai, Central Sulawesi. Here we present a novel approach of using QCDSME strategy in the context of the community empowerement program. The advantages, limitations, lesson learned and further recommendation of the QCDSME approach are also discussed in this paper.
