“…In contrast to previous studies in healthy volunteers, neither the pons nor the ACC were activated during bladder filling in patients with Parkinson's disease [65]. In 6-OHDA injected rats, electrical stimulation of the ACC supressed the micturition reflex suggesting the ACC exerts inhibitory effects on micturition [66].…”

“…In the study reported herein, we found that the selective dopamine D1‐like receptor agonist, (±)‐SKF 38393 hydrochloride, increased the A‐URE value. Dopamine depletion in the nigrostriatal bundle can cause progressive degeneration of bladder function . We also demonstrated that (±)‐SKF 38393 hydrochloride enhanced urethral closure pressure, whereas the selective dopamine D2‐like receptor agonist, (–)‐quinpirole hydrochloride, impaired urethral closure in the bladder storage phase of PD rats.…”

“…Dopamine depletion in the nigrostriatal bundle can cause progressive degeneration of bladder function. 7,23 We also demonstrated that (±)-SKF 38393 hydrochloride enhanced urethral closure pressure, whereas the selective dopamine D2-like receptor agonist, (-)-quinpirole hydrochloride, impaired urethral closure in the bladder storage phase of PD rats. The detrusor overactivity has also been well known as supraspinal site through dopamine D1like receptors may mediate inhibition of the micturition reflex in both the normal and dopaminergic cell depleted condition.…”

“…PD-UU can be caused by the neurodegenerative processes of the prefrontal cortex since the frontal cortex-basal ganglia circuit plays a prominent role not only in modulating EF and goal-directed behavior (Funahashi, 2001) but also in suppressing micturition (Winge, 2015). Neuroimaging studies identified that the prefrontal cortex is activated during bladder filling (Kitta et al, 2016) and that progressive neurodegenerative changes in PD cause disruptions of these patterns (Kitta et al, 2006;Fowler and Griffiths, 2010). The causality of connection between EF and PD-UU should be considered as bidirectional, as executive impairment might additionally prevent PD patients from planning or inhibiting physiological processes that lead to PD-UU.…”
