Role of Surface Area in Oxygen Storage Capacity of Ceria–Zirconia as Soot Combustion Catalyst

Abstract: Two thermal stable phases, Ce 0.75 Zr 0.25 O 2 and Ce 0.16 Zr 0.84 O 2 , with different surface area were prepared by coprecipitation. The oxygen storage capacity (OSC) measurements were carried out at 500°C under both transient (CO-O 2 cycle at 0.05, 0.1 and 0.25 Hz) and stationary reaction conditions (CO pulse). In the oxygen storage/release process, the rate-determine step is surface reactions when the specific surface area is lower than 60 m 2 /g. When the surface area increases further, the influence of s… Show more

“…According to the catalysts screening compiled in Figure 3, ceria-base catalysts are among the most effective for soot combustion, and this has promoted an intense research activity during the last years on different ceria-based catalysts for Diesel soot combustion like, among others, ceria doped with Zr [25,[35][36][37][38], Fe [36,39], La [21,36,38], Pr [21,36], Sm [21,36], Tb [36], Cu [40][41][42], Mn [40,43], and Mo [44] and different compounds supported on ceria such as K/Ceria [34,45], Co/Ceria [45][46][47][48][49], Ba,K/Ceria [50,51], Cu-V/Ceria [52], Ag/Ceria [53,54] or Cu/Ceria [55].…”

“…According to the literature, ceria-zirconia materials should be more reactive than pure ceria [4,16,[65][66][67][68]. However, the structural parameters of nanocatalysts play a key role in oxidation catalysis, and hence a proper comparison of the surface reactivity is often difficult to accomplish, due to the complexity of nanocatalysts.…”

“…The surface area of the employed catalyst is known to be of importance [21][22][23], but an improved understanding of the factors determining the intrinsic activity of a catalytic material would be beneficial. Boreskov and co-workers [24] proposed that for metal oxide catalysts the oxygen bond strength on the catalyst surface, as measured by the heat of oxygen chemisorption, is a determining factor for activity in reactions involving oxygen activation.…”
