Role of RigiScan in the Etiologic Differential Diagnosis of Erectile Dysfunction

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this prospective study was to assess the reliability of nocturnal penile tumescence monitoring by an ambulatory RigiScan device in the etiological diagnosis of erectile dysfunction. Patients and Methods: A total of 64 randomized patients with a complaint of impotence for at least 6 months initially underwent nocturnal penile tumescence rigidity (NPTR) monitoring on 2 consecutive nights in a private setting as session 1. All subjects then underwent a comprehensive multidisciplinary diagnos… Show more

“…An alternative to the NPT test for differential diagnosis is the use of audiovisual sexual stimulation (AVSS) [3,4]. Several methods for the objective measurement of penile tumescence and rigidity have been described [5], of which the RigiScan system is most widely used [6]. This method was introduced by Bradley et al [7] in 1985.…”

“…It is interesting to assess whether lower preoperative IIEF-5 scores are related ED post-PKVP. Patients who developed ED postoperatively clearly had much lower preoperative IIEF-5 scores (range [16][17][18][19][20][21]. Thus, the IIEF-5 score is a risk factor for ED post-PKVP.…”

“…[15][16][17][18][19][20] The patients had to have an IIEF-5 score of Ͼ16 and normal NPT, defined as at least one episode of nocturnal erection with both base and tip rigidity exceeding 55% for at least 10 minutes. 12 Nocturnal tumescence was evaluated with the RigiScan (Dacomed, Minneapolis, Minnesota) on three consecutive nights 3 to 4 days preoperatively and again 3 months postoperatively.…”

“…It is well accepted that the results of NPTR have some controversies regarding the period of erection and the rigidity of penis at rapid eye movement (RAM) and has been found to be unreliable to simulate natural erection [21,23,26]. The length of the test period was another factor which made this technique negligible for the clinician.…”
