“Role of radiology in a multidisciplinary approach to patient care”: summary of the ESR International Forum 2022

Abstract: At the ESR International Forum 2022, held at ECR 2022 (July 16 in Vienna, Austria) different views, initiatives, and ideas from participating societies were presented with regard to the position and role of radiology in the changing landscape of health care and its role as an integral part of multidisciplinary teams. While it is unanimously agreed that multidisciplinarity is a key aspect of modern patient care, it creates new challenges that need to be addressed.

“…Similar management strategies have been reported in the literature, reflecting the established standard of care for these malignancies. Furthermore, a multidisciplinary approach involving orthopedicians, radiologists, pathologists, and oncologists is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the disease and its optimal management [ 11 ]. Collaboration between these specialties was pivotal in achieving a diagnosis and formulating a treatment plan tailored to the specific subtype and characteristics of the spindle cell sarcoma in this case.…”

“…Active participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards and conferences allows interventional radiologists to collaborate with other specialists in developing consensus-based treatment plans for cancer patients. This collective approach ensures the selection of the most appropriate and effective interventions tailored to each patient's unique circumstances [55]. In palliative care settings for cancer patients, IR plays a crucial role alongside medical therapy and psychological support.…”

“…However, contemporary practices have seen a shift towards more direct engagement, and the interactions encompass not only clinicians and colleagues but extending to patients and their families as well [ 2 , 3 ]. The theme of the 2022 European Congress of Radiology (ECR), “building bridges” emphasized these changes, underscoring the necessity for radiologists to enhance their communication skills, so as to foster effective interactions with patients, clinical partners, scientists, and the industry [ 4 ].…”
