Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) play a critical role in providing ecosystem services through their provision of herbal remedies, food and natural skin care products, their integration into local economies, and maintaining pollinators’ diversity and populations and ecosystem functioning. Mountainous regions, such as Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park (CVNP), represent unique reservoirs of endemic MAP diversity that require conservation prioritisation. This study aims to provide insights into the sustainable management of MAPs, contributing to efforts to protect Mediterranean biodiversity amid the dual challenges of climate and land-use change, using a suite of macroecological modelling techniques. Following a Species Distribution Modelling framework, we investigated the vulnerability of endemic and non-endemic MAPs to climate and land-use changes. We examined the potential shifts in MAP diversity, distribution, and conservation hotspots within the CVNP. Our results revealed species-specific responses, with endemic taxa facing severe range contractions and non-endemic taxa initially expanding but eventually declining, particularly under land-use change scenarios. Local biodiversity hotspots are projected to shift altitudinally, with considerable area losses in the coming decades and elevated species turnover predicted throughout the CVNP, leading to biotic homogenization. Climate and land-use changes jointly threaten MAP diversity, calling for adaptive conservation strategies, thus highlighting the importance of proactive measures, such as awareness raising, establishing plant micro-reserves, assisted translocation, and promoting sustainable harvesting to protect these species within the CVNP. Our study offers vital insights for managing biodiversity hotspots amid global change pressures, stressing the need to integrate ecological and socioeconomic factors.

A dormência é um fator primordial para o sucesso da germinação das sementes de Senegalia polyphylla principalmente devido a problemas com a germinação e por ataque de besouros. Objetivou-se avaliar métodos alternativos de superação de dormência, como tratamentos com água quente, extrato do licor pirolenhoso (ELP) e óleo essencial (OE), a fim de testar a eficiência na germinação de sementes de Senegalia polyphylla, além de verificar incidência de fungos. As sementes testadas foram coletadas de três árvores matrizes em uma fisionomia de Cerrado, Gurupi-TO. O extrato do licor pirolenhoso (ELP) foi obtido a partir da carbonização da madeira do gênero Eucalyptus spp., no laboratório de Tecnologia e Utilização de Produtos Florestais I e o Óleo Essencial (OE) foi extraído das folhas da espécie Xylopia frutescens, no laboratório de Fitopatologia, Campus Universitário de Gurupi-TO. A maior germinação ocorreu para os tratamentos água a 50 °C e ELP a 5%, ambos com uma porcentagem de 98%. O controle e a água a 50 °C do ELP a 5% foram mais promissores para o índice de velocidade de germinação. Para as plântulas normais, a água a 50 ºC permitiu 94% de plântulas viáveis. Sementes não germinadas foram mais evidentes no tratamento com OE. Foi observada baixa incidência de fungos com a aplicação do OE nas sementes de Senegalia polyphylla. Extrato do licor pirolenhoso a 5% e a água a 50 ° C são métodos alternativos para a superação de dormência das sementes de Senegalia polyphylla, enquanto o óleo essencial de Xylopia frutescens é uma proposta alternativa ao controla da de fungos.

Sustaining Traditional Ethnomedicinal Knowledge and Protected Areas in Synergy: A Case Study of Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary in Kashmir Himalaya

The ethnic communities living near protected areas are critically dependent on medicinal plants for their healthcare. Although several ethnomedicinal studies are available from the Himalaya, quantitative studies focusing on protected areas in this region are largely overlooked. In this study, we aimed to document the ethnomedicinal plants of the Overa-Aru wildlife sanctuary in Kashmir Himalaya. We conducted a systematic field survey in the study area during 2020 – 2021 to collect primary data from 110 participants through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. The data was analyzed using quantitative indices and Pearsonʼs correlation. We recorded 64 plant species used against 8 human disease categories, including some first-time reports from the region. Asteraceae and Lamiaceae were the most dominant families and herbs were the dominant growth form. The most common plant part used were leaves, and the main method of preparation was decoction. Plant species with the highest relative frequency of citation was Achillea millifolium (0.83). Informant consensus factor for each disease category ranged from 0.94 to 0.97. We found a strong positive correlation between participantsʼ age and citations (r = 0.85), but a negative correlation between the participantsʼ education status and citations (r = − 0.11). Our results revealed that the younger generation possesses the least ethnomedicinal information. We recommend that the species with high use values and fidelity level merit priority in phytochemical and pharmaceutical studies. Our findings highlight that protected areas, besides their prime importance in biodiversity conservation, play a pivotal role in providing the healthcare provisioning ecosystem services to the ethnic communities.
