Role of potassium channels in female reproductive system

Abstract: Potassium channels are widely expressed in most types of cells in living organisms and regulate the functions of a variety of organs, including kidneys, neurons, cardiovascular organs, and pancreas among others. However, the functional roles of potassium channels in the reproductive system is less understood. This mini-review provides information about the localization and functions of potassium channels in the female reproductive system. Five types of potassium channels, which include inward-rectifying (Kir),… Show more

“…During pregnancy, the level of calcium increases. Sodium, potassium, and calcium ions, as well as ion channels, are involved in the contraction and relaxation of the uterus [69]. Table 5 shows the role of selected electrolytes in the male and female reproductive systems.…”

“…Steroid hormones (SSH), including calcitriol, can regulate potassium ion channels via direct binding to a channel protein or to an auxiliary protein that regulates the gating properties of the channel. Another possibility is indirect regulation via signaling pathways initiated from SSH receptors in the plasma membrane or cytosol including classic genomic transcriptional pathways or by changing the properties of the lipid bilayer in which the channels are located [58][59][60]. So far, there is no literature data on the influence of calcitriol on the activity of the potassium channels from the inner mitochondrial membrane, and in the case of the cell membrane, this knowledge is reduced to a few studies.…”
