Role of Platelet rich fibrin in wound healing: A critical review

Abstract: Aim:The aim is to review and discuss the strategies available for use of platelet rich fibrin as healing aid in dentistry. Background:Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) is a fibrin matrix in which platelet cytokines, growth factors, and cells are trapped and may be released after a certain time and that can serve as a resorbable membrane. Choukroun and his associates were amongst the pioneers for using PRF protocol in oral and maxillofacial surgery to improve bone healing in implant dentistry. Autologous PRF is conside… Show more

“…Wound healing is a complex event involving various cells, and biochemical mediators, one of the critical part were platelets. In response to tissue damage, activated platelets will form platelet plugs and release various growth factors [11]. These growth factors play an essential role in the various phases of wound healing (the inflammatory phase up to the remodeling phase) [12].…”

“…Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-β) functions to modulate the proliferation of fibroblasts, formation of extracellular matrix, increase collagen production by fibroblasts, neutrophil chemotactic factors, and macrophages, while Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF) plays a role in collagen production, stimulation of angiogenesis, and myoblast proliferation [11].…”

“…En cuanto a la distribución de esta lesión por sexo, Vázquez et al optaron por la enucleación como tratamiento para el odontoma complejo y en el caso descrito también fue el tratamiento de elección, ya que todo odontoma compuesto o complejo debe ser extirpado quirúrgicamente, debido a que puede generar complicaciones locales como, retención dentaria, desplazamiento de los dientes, destrucción ósea, formación de lesiones quísticas o tumorales tipo ameloblastoma, dolor, entre otras (8,11,14,18).…”

“…Hence, there is a constant need for biologically based autologous materials to neutralize the side effects, if any, due to synthetic based biomaterials, to reduce the pulpal inflammation and to promote faster healing [ 8 ]. Platelet rich fibrin is a second generation platelet concentrate introduced by Choukroun et al It is strictly autologous and helps to release the growth factors necessary for the regeneration of dentin pulp complex thereby accelerating the healing process [ 8 , 9 ].…”
