Role of Oxygen Deposition Pressure in the Formation of Ti Defect States in TiO2(001) Anatase Thin Films

Abstract: We report the study of anatase TiO(001)-oriented thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on LaAlO(001). A combination of in situ and ex situ methods has been used to address both the origin of the Ti-localized states and their relationship with the structural and electronic properties on the surface and the subsurface. “…The atomic structure of the TiO 2 films is investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Similarly to previously investigated as-grown samples [17,27,28], HRTEM reveals the presence of a modulated structure all through the film thickness in the case of UHV-annealed TiO 2 films also; this is tentatively associated with the occurrence of oxygen vacancies, selforganizing into regular arrays of planar defects.
