Role of occupational therapy in musicians’ health: a scoping review protocol

Abstract: Review question/objectiveThe purpose of this proposed review is twofold: first, to understand the role of occupational therapy presented in the musicians’ health literature; and second, to explore the potential for this role.IntroductionThe intense movement, awkward postures, concentration and emotional communication required of musicians can place them at increased risk of music-related health conditions, such as musculoskeletal disorders and performance anxiety. “…The findings of this study support a growing body of literature on the unique role occupational therapy can play in addressing music student health (Guptill, 2014; Ting & Rocker, 2019; Villas et al, 2020; Wolff et al, 2021). This small sample ( N = 12) exploratory study supports a holistic, occupation-based, and client-centered approach grounded in the occupational adaptation model of practice when addressing music students’ PRMDs.…”

“…However, few studies specifically explore how occupational therapy can address PRMDs (Guptill, 2014). Additional research, such as efforts by Villas et al (2020) to detail “the current and potential role of occupational therapy in the care of instrumental musicians’ playing-related health conditions,” may help clarify occupational therapy’s role in addressing these conditions. In addition, little research exists exploring how occupational therapists can help schools of music provide education on health concerns related to music practice and performance.…”

“…Past literature believed that it could provide an insider's perspective so that the public could understand the experiences of musicians' injuries and give them more understanding and support (Matei & Ginsborg, 2022;Steemers et al, 2022). It is also of great benefit for healthcare workers to be aware of musicians' honest thoughts and needs to provide them with better treatment (Salonen, 2018;Villas et al, 2020;Junkin & Janelle, 2019). This study involved student pianists with PRMD-related experiences in higher education institutions in Chengdu, China, as the research participants.…”

“…Meanwhile, researchers have conducted occupation-focused scoping reviews with both clinical (e.g., Constantinidis & Matsukura, 2021;Uys et al, 2020;Wallis et al, 2020) and theoretical (e.g., Hunt & McKay, 2015;Malfitano et al, 2016) investigations. A growing number of occupational therapy scoping review protocol papers have also been published in recent years, allowing the authors to share their research with interested audiences at an earlier stage of their process (Bell & Hallett, 2021;Colquhoun et al, 2017;Nhunzvi et al, 2019;Villas et al, 2020). Inspired by these authors, we propose to conduct a scoping review of resilience published in occupation-focused research literature.…”
