Role of obesity and abdominal shape morphometric features to predict postoperative complications and quality of lymph node dissection of gastrectomy for gastric cancer

Abstract: Obesity and abdominal shape morphometric features have been thought to be independent risk factors for surgical outcomes after gastrectomy.A total of 113 patients undergoing surgery for primary gastric adenocarcinoma from June 2011 to January 2015 were retrospectively included. Body mass index, visceral fatty area, anterior-posterior abdominal and transverse diameters and depth ratio at levels of the umbilicus, the gastroesophageal junction and the root of the celiac artery were measured or calculated. Patient… Show more

“…In some studies, it has been proposed that the risk of pancreatic fistula formation is influenced by the patient's BMI and the extent of the surgical procedures 6 . In addition, no significant association has been detected between BMI and abdominal shape indexes and postoperative complications including POPF in another study performed by the same surgical team 23 . After total gastrectomy, Katai et al 24 reported the risk factors for POPF as the age, BMI, and the dissection of the lymph nodes along the distal splenic artery.…”

“…At present, there are various measurements of abdominal shape. Most studies have focused on measurements at the navel level, including the thickness of the subcutaneous fat, the anteroposterior diameters and the left-right diameters, and the area of the visceral fat ( 9 11 ). It was found that different abdominal shapes may affect the short-term surgical outcomes of LADG.…”

“…Most studies have focused on measurements at the navel level, including the thickness of the subcutaneous fat, the anteroposterior diameters and the left-right diameters, and the area of the visceral fat. [9][10][11] It was found that different abdominal shapes may affect the short-term surgical outcomes of LADG. Furthermore, the abdominal shape is not only a structure at the navel level but also a three-dimensional structure from the xiphoid process to the pubis.…”
