Role of non-coding RNAs and RNA modifiers in cancer therapy resistance

Abstract: As the standard treatments for cancer, chemotherapy and radiotherapy have been widely applied to clinical practice worldwide. However, the resistance to cancer therapies is a major challenge in clinics and scientific research, resulting in tumor recurrence and metastasis. The mechanisms of therapy resistance are complicated and result from multiple factors. Among them, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), along with their modifiers, have been investigated to play key roles in regulating tumor development and mediating th… Show more

“…In addition to miRNAs, ncRNAs contain several types including lncRNAs, circular RNA (circRNAs), small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs), and so on, making up 98% in the human genome [94]. Among these, lncRNA is the one first found as miRNA sponge [93], and many recent studies illustrated the role lncRNAs take in miRNA-related tumor regulation.…”

“…Recent studies have described the mechanisms of several ncRNAs in the regulation of the autophagy process in tumor cells (137). For instance, circNRIP1 was proven to modulate the autophagy and cancer cell metabolism switch into the Warburg effect by alteration of AKT1 expression and, consequently, the AKT/mTOR pathway, which induces tumor development and metastasis in gastric cancer (138).…”

“…Chemoresistance is one of the main causes for therapeutic failure in cancers. Dysregulated autophagy [ 8 , 107 , 108 ], lncRNAs [ 33 , 109 , 110 , 111 ], and circRNAs [ 107 , 112 , 113 , 114 , 115 ] have been indicated to be associated with drug resistance in cancers. ceRNAs can play important roles in the regulation of autophagy-mediated chemoresistance in cancers.…”
