Role of Nesfatin-1 in the Reproductive Axis of Male Rat

Abstract: Nesfatin-1 is an important molecule in the regulation of reproduction. However, its role in the reproductive axis in male animals remains to be understood. Here, we found that nesfatin-1 was mainly distributed in the arcuate nucleus (ARC), paraventricular nucleus (PVN), periventricular nucleus (PeN), and lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) of the hypothalamus; adenohypophysis and Leydig cells in male rats. Moreover, the concentrations of serum nesfatin-1 and its mRNA in hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPGA) va… Show more

“…Nesfatin‐1 provoked a rise in LH levels in both sexes in rats, when injected ICV (Garcia‐Galiano et al, , ). Central injection of nesfatin‐1 decreased serum testosterone, LH and FSH levels in puberty as well as in adult male rats (Gao et al, ). In addition, the same report has shown as well that nesfatin‐1 could increase the testosterone level in vitro (Gao et al, ).…”

In addition, the same report has shown as well that nesfatin‐1 could increase the testosterone level in vitro (Gao et al, ). Moreover, it was also demonstrated that central injections of anti‐NUCB2 morpholino oligonucleotides during pubertal maturity delayed vaginal opening, decreased ovarian weight and plasma LH titres in female rats in puberty (Garcia‐Galiano et al, ).…”

“…administration of nesfatin-1 significantly reduced the expression of GnRH mRNA in the hypothalamus and FSH and LH mRNA in the pituitary (Gao et al 2016), suggesting an inhibitory role of nesfatin-1 on the HPG axis. Matching observations were also made in fish after peripheral administration of nesfatin-1 (Gonzalez et al 2012).…”

“…Nesfatin-1 (an 82-amino acids hormone) has been reported to play a role in the regulation of energy stores via its anorectic actions and has also been implicated in gonadal function. Therefore, nesfatin-1 may play a role in the central control of reproduction [15] . Notwithstanding a role in reproductive behaviors, the widespread distribution of phoenixin in various subnuclei of the hypothalamus suggests that the peptide may mediate a broad range of physiological and/or pathophysiological functions.…”
