Role of Multidetector Computed Tomography Urography in the Evaluation of Obstructive Uropathy: A Review

Shreya Khandelwal,

Anshul Sood
et al.

Abstract: Obstructive uropathy, a prevalent clinical problem, can irreparably harm the kidneys if not treated promptly. As a result, accurate diagnosis is necessary for prompt management. This study examines the utility of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) urography in identifying obstructive uropathy. PubMed, Google, Embase, Medline, and other electronic databases were used to search the English-language literature. The search phrases were obstructive urinary infections or urinary bladder or kidneys or MDCT. The… Show more

“…A single umbilical artery is noted in about 35 percent of the patients, which can be associated with urologic abnormalities [6]. Congenital renal anomalies may include renal agenesis, renal dysgenesis, congenital PUJ obstruction, congenital cystic renal disease, horseshoe kidney, cross-fused ectopic kidney, etc [14]. Ultrasonography is the modality of choice for diagnosing fetal renal anomalies [15].…”

“…Modern multidetector CT scans with additional excretory phase images offer a multiplanar imaging modality with good spatial resolution, allowing to locate the site and source of obstruction. Additionally, they offer further information on renal functioning due to the evaluation of the excretion of infused contrast by the kidneys[ 6 ]. Functional tests, such as diuretic isotopic renogram or other invasive tests such as Whitaker, usually do not have their place in the acute setting.…”

“…UTO may occur at various levels, including the renal pelvis, ureter, or bladder outlet, each presenting unique challenges in both diagnosis and management. Recent advancements in imaging modalities, such as computed tomography (CT) urography and magnetic resonance imaging, have enhanced our ability to visualize and characterize obstructive lesions[ 6 ]. Additionally, molecular signaling studies have shed light on the underlying individual predispositions and signaling pathways involved in obstructive renal failure[ 7 ].…”
