Role of Microvascular Tone and Extracellular Matrix Contraction in the Regulation of Interstitial Fluid

Abstract: G enetic mutations that predispose to thoracic aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections (TAADs) affect structural components of the extracellular matrix (ECM), transmembrane structures involved in mechanical integrity, mechanosensing, and signal transduction, or intracellular components of the cell contractile apparatus. [1][2][3] Concepts and studies are being developed to explain how such alterations may impact the response of the aorta to hemodynamic stress and drive abnormal aortic remodeling. 4 Here, we pr… Show more

“…Whether aortic wall macrophages may also play such a role is still unknown. We believe that this merits further exploration given the recently proposed role of interstitial fluid pressure regulation in the pathogenesis of aortic aneurysm and the susceptibility to aortic dissection 138 .…”

“…Aortic aneurysms and aortic dissection are both degenerative lesions of the aorta and share the same pathological mechanisms, such as the excessive loss of aortic extracellular matrix mediated by multiple pathological factors, especially local aortic inflammation (Mallat et al, 2016;Rabkin, 2017;Raffort et al, 2017;Sherifova and Holzapfel, 2019).…”
