Role of interleukin-6 in acute pancreatitis. Comparison with C-reactive protein and phospholipase A.

Abstract: Plasma values of immunoreactive interleukin-6, C-reactive protein and phospholipase A have been determined in serial samples from 24 patients with acute pancreatitis ('mild' pancreatitis nine, 'severe' pancreatitis 15). Median plasma concentrations of interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, and phospholipase A activity were significantly higher in patients with 'severe' illness (p<0.001) than those with 'mild' illness. A particularly marked increase in interleukin-6 was found in two patients with necrotising pancre… Show more

“…Here, we demonstrated the role of IL-6 trans-signaling in SAP and ALI, showing that IL-6 is not merely a marker, but a relevant pathophysiological player in the disease process (12,13). Our results showed that IL-6 exerted its effects during SAP and lethal ALI predominantly via IL-6 trans-signaling.…”

“…In an attempt to identify surrogate parameters as predictors for complicated AP, several association studies linking cytokines and chemokines with AP severity have been conducted (11). Among these, serum levels of IL-6 and the IL-6-dependent acute phase protein C-reactive protein (CRP) were identified as the most reliable parameters for SAP (12,13). Research has yet to establish whether IL-6 or CRP are merely markers or have any pathophysiological impact.…”

“…In four clinical studies, IL-6 has uniformly been shown to increase significantly in the serum from patients with complicated AP compared to those with mild attacks, with its higher levels occurring 24–36 h earlier than those of the C-reactive protein [81, 82, 83, 84]. In a recent study, Vogt et al [85]have found an initial and early increase in IL-6 in patients with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)-induced pancreatitis, which does not occur in patients without clinical or laboratory signs of pancreatitis after ERCP.…”
