Role of income diversification in protecting natural forests: evidence from rural households in forest margins of Sri Lanka

Abstract: Income diversification among households living in forest margins helps to maintain a sustainable livelihood. Reducing forest dependency helps in-situ conservation of biodiversity thereby conserving forest resources. This paper presents evidence of income diversification and its effects on forest resource extraction by rural communities living in forest margins. Diversified income sources of typical households include crop farming, off-farm employment, animal husbandry, home gardening and extraction of non-timb… Show more

“…The tree species that produced raw materials, the types of forest products collected, and their uses in daily life as found in this study matches with studies carried out in Sri Lanka [50] and in the Chin State of Myanmar [4]. Fifty-four tree species were identified to be mostly used by the local communities in the study area.…”

“…Therefore, poor households with little income from agriculture may be more dependent on the forest (Cavendish, 2000;Godoy, 1993;Gutanilake et al, 1993). This result is in line with the finding of Illukpitiya & Yanagida (2008). They stated that forest dependency decreased for households with more diversified income sources and sources of diversify household income include agriculture, livelihood production, etc.…”

“…Management decisions without considering the role of forest for rural forest dwellers especially low and middle income households could not reach expected goals. Policy enforcement could be improved with the involvement of rural people in forest conservation by addressing the needs of the dependent communities and their livelihood (Illukpitiya & Yanagida 2008). This study could be used as the one of the scientific guidance pointing out the role of forest dependent communities in management of natural forest resources.…”
