Role of foliar spray of plant growth regulators in improving photosynthetic pigments and metabolites in Plantago ovata (Psyllium) under salt stress–A field appraisal

Abstract: Salinity is one of the major abiotic factors that limit the growth and productivity of plants. Foliar application of plant growth regulators (PGRs) may help plants ameliorate the negative impacts of salinity. Thus, a field experiment was conducted at the Botanical Garden University of Balochistan, Quetta, to explore the potential role of PGRs, i.e., moringa leaf extract (MLE; 10%), proline (PRO; 1 µM), salicylic acid (SA; 250 µM), and thiourea (TU; 10 mM) in ameliorating the impacts of salinity (120 mM) on Pla… Show more

“…Salinity has been shown to significantly reduce plant height, stem girth, biomass both above and below ground, and hinder leaf cell division [ 4 ]. Additionally, salt stress inhibits root growth [ 5 ], reduces root vigor, and its plant photosynthetic process is also greatly affected [ 6 ], which destroys chloroplast structure in the plant, increases the number of cysts and basal lamellae [ 7 ], and degrades chlorophylls and carotenoids. These changes affect the plant’s ability to carry out photosynthesis, which ultimately affects the plant’s dry matter accumulation and its yield [ 8 ].…”

“…Phytohormones are endogenous messenger molecules that regulate different defensive responses to several abiotic stresses, including heat and salinity [9,10]. Exogenous applications of plant hormones previous to or parallel with stress significantly recover stress-induced damage and enhance plant tolerance [11,12].…”

“…In plant various morpho-physiological, and biochemical process are control by gibberellin such as, cell division, plants growth in height, elongation, rate of transpiration, flowering, and leaf expansion (24). Samad et al, (25) reported that PGRs application enhances the plant photosynthetic pigments efficacy, secondary metabolites contents and decreases hydrogen peroxide and MDA under salinity stress. Salicylic acid is plant growth regulator that consist of diverse phenolic compounds and aromatic ring synthesized in plants.…”
