Role of Epigallocatechin Gallate in Glucose, Lipid, and Protein Metabolism and L-Theanine in the Metabolism-Regulatory Effects of Epigallocatechin Gallate

Abstract: Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and L-theanine (LTA) are important bioactive components in tea that have shown promising effects on nutrient metabolism. However, whether EGCG alone or combined with LTA can regulate the glucose, lipid, and protein metabolism of healthy rats remains unclear. Therefore, we treated healthy rats with EGCG or the combination of EGCG and LTA (EGCG+LTA) to investigate the effects of EGCG on nutrient metabolism and the role of LTA in the metabolism-regulatory effects of EGCG. The resul… Show more

“…Previous studies showed that EGCG could target glucose metabolism in various types of cancers by reducing the activity and levels of vital glycolytic enzymes including hexokinase (HK), phosphofructokinase (PFK), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and pyruvate kinase (Lin et al, 2021; Wei et al, 2018; Wei et al, 2019). More recent studies reported that cellular energy metabolism changes, particularly abnormal glycolysis, and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, were linked to cancer drug resistance (Martinez‐Outschoorn et al, 2017; Peng et al, 2021).…”

“…In the case of glycolysis, EGCG activates AMPK through regulating LKB1, and the activation of AMPK subsequently phosphorylates PFK. The inhibition of fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis induced by EGCG is achieved by ACC1 and HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) through the LKB1/AMPK signaling pathway [ 225 ]. EGCG was also found to inhibit autophagic processes in human melanoma skin A375 cells by inhibiting AMPK phosphorylation [ 226 ].…”

“…Epigallocatechin gallate (EG) is considered as the most abundant polyphenol with bioactivity in green tea isolated from Camellia sinensis [ 15 ]. As a bioactive dietary component, EG owns a great many pharmacological actions including antioxidation, anti-inflammation, antifibrosis, and inhibiting endoplasmic reticulum stress [ 16 18 ].…”
