Role of environmentally induced epigenetic transgenerational inheritance in evolutionary biology: Unified Evolution Theory

Abstract: The current evolutionary biology theory primarily involves genetic alterations and random DNA sequence mutations to generate the phenotypic variation required for Darwinian natural selection to act. This neo-Darwinian evolution is termed the Modern Evolution Synthesis and has been the primary paradigm for nearly 100 years. Although environmental factors have a role in neo-Darwinian natural selection, Modern Evolution Synthesis does not consider environment to impact the basic molecular processes involved in ev… Show more

“…Second, our study suggest increased heterologous protection against fungal and viral infections by the mRNA-LNPs platform, that may thus expand its beneficial effects. Third, our study also shows the capacity of these vaccines to transmit protection trans-generationally, thus supporting the concept of Lamarckian inheritance in mammals (Skinner and Nilsson, 2021). However, our study only partially opens the door towards understanding the various immunological effects of mRNA-LNP platform.…”

“…Transgenerational epigenetic inheritance has the potential to be adaptive, with major implications for heredity, breeding and evolution [ 96 ]. The origins of transgenerational germline epigenetic alterations have been shown to be throughout gametogenesis from the PGCs to the mature gametes [ 97 ]. The exposure of a gestating female to an environmental factor during pregnancy might directly affect offspring’s PGCs.…”

“…The exposure to EDCs triggers epimutations in fetal germ cells that may be corrected in the next generation. The correction of epimutations aiming at preventing the transgenerational inheritance of such errors caused by environmental factors may have played an evolutionary role [ 97 ]. These transgenerational epigenetic changes found in sperm are likely exposure-specific.…”

“…Epigenetic inheritance can occur via shared somatic modifications (shared diet and environment in the same household), via gamete-based processes, but also via the transmission of DNA methylation, histone modifications, and expression of non-coding RNAs [ 152 ]. At the molecular level, several environmental agents can directly influence phenotypic variation, genetic variation, and inheritance [ 153 ], mostly via the transmission of DNA methylation and histone modifications across generations [ 154 ]. Family history is a strong risk factor for the development of CRC, especially at a young age [ 83 ].…”
