Role of Endothelial Glucocorticoid Receptor in the Pathogenesis of Kidney Diseases

Abstract: Glucocorticoids, as multifunctional hormones, are widely used in the treatment of various diseases including nephrological disorders. They are known to affect immunological cells, effectively treating many autoimmune and inflammatory processes. Furthermore, there is a growing body of evidence demonstrating the potent role of glucocorticoids in non-immune cells such as podocytes. Moreover, novel data show additional pathways and processes affected by glucocorticoids, such as the Wnt pathway or autophagy. The en… Show more

“…Glucocorticoids are steroid hormones that are often used for inflammation and immune suppression across multiple diseases by repressing the activity of immunologic transcription factors such as nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), AP-1, and T-bet (Hudson et al 2018 ). Additionally, glucocorticoids have more recently been investigated for potential pathway involvement in nephrological diseases and in pathways such as Wnt signaling and autophagy (Przybyciński et al 2021 ). While neurology/psychology-indicated drugs do have the most compounds annotated in the Drug Repurposing Hub we used for annotation, further investigation is warranted, especially due to the noted comorbidity between ADPKD and depression (Simms et al 2016 ).…”

“…Previous research and our findings suggest that abnormal light exposure may influence CORT secretion. Glucocorticoids have multiple functions and have been widely used to treat various diseases, including kidney disease [34]. They affect immune cells and induce severe renal injury [35].…”
