Role of DNA Repair Variants and Diagnostic Radiology Exams in Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Risk: A Pooled Analysis of Two Case–Control Studies

“…Elevated IRRs for thyroid cancer were reported in Australian (IRR 1.40, 95% CI 1.23-1.59) ( 100 ) and Korean studies (IRR 2.19, 95% CI 1.97-2.44) ( 101 ). In a French study of thyroid cancers with mean thyroid dose of 2.79 mGy (0-194 mGy, range) from diagnostic radiology exposures that included conventional radiology examinations, CT scans, and nuclear medicine procedures, a statistically significant dose–response was found (OR at 1 mGy 1.00-1.02 in different models) in childhood exposures but not in adults ( 102 ). As estimated for the youngest children, the mean excess lifetime cancer risk per 10 000 chest scans (thyroid doses 27-20.3 mGy) varied from 11 to 35 cases in girls and from 2 to 6 cases in boys aged from 0 (newborns) to 10 years ( 103 ).…”
