Role of Dietary Zinc as a Nutritional Immunomodulator

Abstract: Zinc is ubiquitous in all living cells. Structural and catalytic properties of cellular enzymes are zinc dependent. Zinc deficiency leads to a variety of pathological abnormalities with immune impairment. It is an established fact that nutritional status contributes to overall immune response of individuals. Outcome of zinc deficiency on immune system is so drastic that it is difficult to conceive at the first instance. Zinc supplementation has been advocated to prevent diarrheal disease in children with poor … Show more

“…Zinc is a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes, involved in cell proliferation, DNA replication and signal transduction (Coleman 1992). Zinc deficiency causes reduced peripheral T cell counts, oxidative burst and T cell dependent antibody production (Goswami et al 2005). Lambs fed on a semi-purified diet severely deficient in zinc (3.7 mg Zn/kg) showed a reduced blastogenic response to PHA with lower percentage of lymphocytes in lambs (Droke and Spears 1993).…”

“…A potential explanation of the role of zinc is that it is second only to iron as the most abundant trace metal found in eukaryotic organisms . It is a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes associated with DNA replication, signal transduction, and cell proliferation, particularly that taking place in immune cells (T and B cells) that produce immunoglobulins and cytokines . Regarding EHV‐1‐induced myeloencephalopathy, cytotoxic T‐lymphocytes (CTL) are recognized as important for controlling the magnitude of postinfection leukocyte‐associated viremia and subsequent development of neurologic disease .…”

(Alonso et al, 2004;Blanco-Penedo, Shore, Miranda, Benedito, & López-Alonso, 2009;Tame, 2012).…”
