Role of Dietary Antioxidants in Neurodegenerative Diseases: Where are We Standing?

Abstract: : This review presents the potential effects of dietary antioxidants on neurodegenerative diseases. The relationship between autoimmunity and antioxidants, and their preventive effect on neurodegenerative diseases are evaluated. The driven factors of neurodegeneration and the potential effects of natural antioxidants are summarized for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, spongiform encephalopathy, Huntington’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The effect of oxidative stress … Show more

“…Therefore, inhibition of LRRK2 kinase function is a promising therapeutic strategy for PD treatment. Indeed, we demonstrate that CRE is an effective antioxidant agent 62 . Thus, not only pharmacological inhibition of LRRK2 kinase but also natural substance from avocado's by‐products 63 might be an excellent source for disease‐modifying strategy.…”

“…Oxidative stress is present for many neurodegenerative diseases (Bakir et al, 2020). The overproduction of ROS and NO beyond the antioxidant capacity of cells could cause irrevocable severe oxidative damage to the cells post METH administration (Solhi et al, 2014;Wells et al, 2016).…”

“…Antioxidants are compounds as attractive supplement which can prevent some diseases and disorder related to oxidative stress triggered by reactive oxygen species (ROS) that formed naturally in oxygen metabolisms that caused depletion of antioxidant or accumulation of ROS [11][12][13]. Many synthetic antioxidants are distributed in the market for protective supplements but these products have side effect.…”
